«“Goa and the Great Mughal” is the title of an exhibition that the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is holding between 9 June and 5 September 2004 at the Temporary Exhibitions Gallery of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon. The exhibition brings together a superb selection of works of art that bear witness to the cultural exchanges between the Portuguese and the Mughal Empire during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The Mughal Empire appeared during one of the most sophisticated periods in the history of world art and – encouraged by the open-mindedness of its emperors – incorporated a broad range of influences. The exhibits, some of which have never been seen in the West, exemplify this reciprocal assimilation of artistic elements, ornaments and themes from the respective cultures.
Work on this project began in 1999, involving a team of international specialists whose research work will be included in an accompanying book, to be published in conjunction with Scala Publishers (London). This will help to provide a better understanding of both an age and of a context for relations that have, as yet, been little studied.» (> Fund. Calouste Gulbenkian)
